Don’t Be Evil

A dissertation comparing contemporary multinational corporations to colonial trading companies.

The Go project was the result of an essay that I had written which examined the similarities between Google and the East India Company and investigated themes of data privacy and labour exploitation. After graduating, I felt that the dissertation deserved to be designed and printed.

I designed my essay to invoke the feeling of a manual with spiral binding, naming it after one of the principles Google founded its company upon but soon abandoned – ‘Don’t be evil’. Infographics and images are printed on clear film, toying with the visualisation of transparency and honesty.

Chains recur as a motif throughout the book, relating both to the hyperlinks and chains which build the internet and the supply chains and shackles used by trading companies.
