Community Courtyard

An event to connect people with local history – and each other.

The area of Pimlico has a rich history as the former site of Millbank Prison. In response to a live brief to investigate the area around our college, we discovered a courtyard on campus which sees little footfall but contains a historic bollard, marking the place from which prisoners were transported to Australia.

We aimed to make people aware of the area’s history and bring people together in a place which was made for separation. We hosted a one-day event for strangers to visit the courtyard and interact with one another while appreciating that the place has evolved.

Identity created together.

Arrows were the core of the identity, symbolising coming together and being forced apart. They were put around the area to direct people to the courtyard.

Bollard-shaped prompt cards were left around the courtyard to encourage strangers to strike up conversation.

We projected conversation prompts onto the ground in front of the courtyard’s benches, beginning with “Tell the person next to you…” and rotating through different phrases every minute.
